January 2009 Prayer for Peace This month, we will celebrate the life of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. and the messages that he conveyed. At the same time, we all are thinking about Israel as well as traumas affecting people around the world. In that vein, we would like to share with you a prayer that is said in the morning service at the end of the Amidah. Sim Shalom asks for peace for Jews all around the world. We wish this same prayer not only our immediate community, but for Jews and all people around the world.
O grant peace, happiness, blessing, grace, kindness and mercy to us and to all Israel thy people. Bless us all alike, our Father, with the light of thy countenance; indeed, by the light of the countenance they hast given us, Lord our God, a Torah of life, loving-kindess, charity, blessing, mercy, life and peace. May it please thee to bless thy people Israel with peace at all times and hours. Blessed art thou, O Lord, who blessest thy people Israel with peace. Translation from HaSidur Hashalem: Daily Prayer Book, translated and annotated by Philip Birnbaum, Hebrew Publishing Company, New York, 1999.
